so we flew at 6 am to get to LA and drive to Head Mountian i think?? its a ski resort about an hour north of LA.
now keeping in mind, i didnt get to sleep much on thursday night, this was a bum out. do the math....show on thursday ends at 12, and we have to be at the airport at 4 a.m. to check in with our gear.
so back to our story, we land, drive to this mountian and arrive, but there is no backline gear. now for those of you who dont know production of a rock show....which is most people...and you should be glad you dont know this. backline is what makes the show happen....
so here we are, 1 hour from LA and the closest rental shop, 70 miles away, and it is 12 noon. we are supposed to play no later than 4pm.....this is not good. so we make some calls, figure out who dropped the ball and work on a solution, by the time something is come upon it is 230, great.....
however, the solution is this, there is a guy in town who has some gear that will work, which i made the mistake of assuming was communicated someone who knew what they were talking about.
i wont bore you with the details here, but i ended up with the worst possible drum kit, and 2 practice amps that you would find in your pot head 17 year old brothers bedroom.....funny enough, they had to move some bongs out of the way to get some of this stuff for me.
im not knocking pot heads, wait, maybe i am, but drugs alter your perception, thats the point right?
well, all im saying is, when your altered perception of the world affects my day it had better end well, especially when it comes to work.
now here is the conundrum, the pot head gear saved the show and made it happen, however it made me look like a tool for having it on stage....so....am i thankful for the bong water covered drums? yes....and no.....because without the bong water drums i would have had no show, and i had not slept in 35 hours, which would be awesome! .....however, my job as a professional is to keep the show from imploding, so the bong water drums did just that....barely, just barely.
i guess my point is, sometimes you don't know what is gonna save the day, or kind of ruin it , or both.....i cant make a clear call on this one....but i will say this, "thanks pot head in some ski resort town....you made something happen, and that is probably more than you've done all winter."
